What can you use the app for?

Trello.com gives users a way to collaborate with a team or group. The application provides users with a single project board. The board displays lists full of “cards.” Each card features an individual project. Cards are double sided, so users can view the “back” of the card (which appears as a pop up on the board page) to see more information on that specific task. As the user works, they can click and drag a card from one column into another as the task progresses. Tasks can also be sorted using the same drag and drop system to change priorities. Trello displays boards in a web browser, so the user can shrink the browse down to view other pages. Each change is updated in real time so the entire team always sees the most recent version of their Trellow cards and lists.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Trello was announced in August of 2011 and officially released the following September. The application received some well deserved attention from many popular tech media outlets, including Tech Crunch. Users found that the application was simple, but very effective for most tasks. Although it doesn’t offer many detailed features of other project management applications, it gets the job done (and at the right price). The current version has made quite an impression with users.

What are the differences to other apps?

Trello’s simplicity is what makes it a little different from other, similar applications. Although the card and board concept is not a new one, it is also not widely used. This basic design allows the user to easily organize their project data and tasks in a way that makes sense to them. Users can also display various steps by creating individual columns and moving the cards through each as they work on the task. The drag and drop interface is as easy as it gets so users can spend less time learning how to organize their project and more time actually getting it done.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

Trellow looks professional and feels completely smooth. The dark teal boar provides an eye-catching contrast that makes it easy to read the content on each card presented. Cards are white with simple black or grey text and icons. This keeps things from becoming distracting as the user adds more items to their board. Users can also add images to the back of each card so the user has many ways to share and record the information they need to collaborate.

How does the registration process work?

New users can create a Trellow account by clicking the green “Sign Up” button found in the upper, right hand corner of the homepage. A matching “Create an Account button is also available near the center, along the left hand side. The user is directed to the simple registration form, which requires a full name, email address and password. A green button found to the right of the form invites the user to sign in with an existing Google account. After submitting the form, the user is advised that they must check their email for a verification link which must be clicked to access their new account.

What does it cost to use the application?

The price of Trellow is one of the best aspects of the application. All users can create an account and use Trello for free. There are no subscription fees or other expenses required to maintain an account. Users are given access to all current features. The account includes a 10 MB upload limit. No premium paid membership is offered at this time, with no word on whether one is planned for the future.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Trello.com is a helpful tool for anyone working on a project. Teams can really appreciate the real time updates and easy access that allows them to share files and content with one another. Individuals can also plan and complete a project using Trello. The application is very user friendly and offers immediate updates as the user edits their cards in their browser. Mobile versions are also planned for the near future.

  • Users can register and login with an existing Google account
  • A drag and drop interface allows users to easily change card positions
  • Each change is updated in real time so all users see recent edits
  • Images can be uploaded to the back of individual cards
  • Team members can discuss tasks right on the project board
